Three peaks challenge Print

I've set up a 3 peaks challenge group on facebook to put out some feelers and see what the level of interest is.  So far quite a few people have joined.  If you're not in the know, it involves scaling the 3 mighty British peaks; Ben Nevis (1344m), Scafell Pike (978m) and Snowdon (1085m) in 24 hours.  To make it a bit more interesting, if it goes ahead it'll probably take place the weekend before we start back after Christmas hols - 10/11 Jan.  It'll be snowy on Big Ben Nevis and we'll be doing a fair bit of walking in the dark so some decent gear and a head torch will be essential. If you're interested get yourself joined up!

If anyone has/knows someone who has a minibus liscence and is prepared to come on an all expenses paid road trip can you please let me know.  The planning of this event hinges on you!!

This is an endurance race, so fitties only need apply. Estimating a cost of £60 per head to cover minibus, driver, 1 nights accomodation and some food. If your into it £10 sponsorship for charity should be fairly easy to come by and we can pass it on to the charities comittee.

GEM Students Prove a Success Print

Graduate Entry Medical students proved a success rowing for Derby Rowing Club at Royal Chester’s 5k North of England Head of the River Race on Saturday.  Rowing in the Derby University first eight (Sen4 8+), GEM’s Lee Garratt and Tom Kemp destroyed their opposition, passing Lancaster University 2nd eight within one kilometre off the start and swiftly putting Trafford RC, Agecroft RC, Northwich RC, Kings, Liverpool and Salford Universities out of contention. Despite driving down the lead obtained by Lancaster University’s 1st eight, they eventually had to settle for third place in what proved to be a very hard fought race.

In their first race (Nov 8+), novice GEM rowers William Aston, Andrew Boothroyd, David Bloomfield and David “Dolph” Robertshaw produced a sterling performance under what proved to be challenging conditions for any rower.  Battling high winds and late crew substitutions they dug deep to gain a substantial lead over Liverpool, REX and Salford novice eights, finishing well within the pack and beating Manchester University and Bridgnorth RC to 10th place in an extremely tight finish.  An excellent start, we can certainly expect good things from these chaps over the coming regatta season.

Come one and all to see the mighty GEM juggernaut take on Ashbourne in a grudge rematch at Ashbourne Rugby Club. A chance to wash away the pain of our 17-0 defeat last year should not be missed, and if victory is not achieved then at least you'll have the comical combination of big lads in small shorts. Kick off at 2:15pm.
