We're having a charity bed push Thursday 20th May, and we'd love some volunteers! We'll start off at the med school around 2.30 pm and push the bed into and around town, finishing at the DRI at around 6-7pm (feel free to come and go as you please).

And yes, there is a dress code: medics/patients/something along those lines. We'll see you there!

We're hosting a GEM Pub Quiz Night next Wednesday 28th April! It will be held at Blessington Carriage. The quiz will start at 8pm but we have the place from 7 so we can get a few drinks in beforehand.

The quiz will be £1.50 to enter, there will be four rounds of questions, and there will, of course, be a prize for the winning team! Better brush up on your general knowledge as it's not all going to be medical!

You can participate as an individual, group of friends, or as part of your PBL group - though the teams are going to be limited to four people per team!

See you there!

So far this year GEMs have raised a whopping £1644 for charity (plus one US quarter, 5 centimes of a euro and one fake pound coin...!)

£1006.90 has been raised for The Prostate Cancer Charity through 'Movember' and the sponsored growing of some impressive moustaches. We have also had a very entertaining charity comedy revue, numerous cake sales, a raffle and an Easter egg hunt in aid of the GEM charities. Currently the charities nominated by GEMs are Medicins Sans Frontieres, The medical foundation for the victims of torture and the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance (see links page).

For more info please contact Kate (mzydkb), Kat (mzydkhg) or Emily (mzydeb).

Once again, the annual moustache-growing event that is 'Movember' has been a huge success at the medical school in Derby. Not only have our medical students amused staff and patients alike with their humourous facial hair, but they've managed to break last year's fundraising target by raising over £1000 for GEM charities in one event! Thanks to everyone who supported the event, both financially and follicularly.

Three peaks challenge Print

I've set up a 3 peaks challenge group on facebook to put out some feelers and see what the level of interest is.  So far quite a few people have joined.  If you're not in the know, it involves scaling the 3 mighty British peaks; Ben Nevis (1344m), Scafell Pike (978m) and Snowdon (1085m) in 24 hours.  To make it a bit more interesting, if it goes ahead it'll probably take place the weekend before we start back after Christmas hols - 10/11 Jan.  It'll be snowy on Big Ben Nevis and we'll be doing a fair bit of walking in the dark so some decent gear and a head torch will be essential. If you're interested get yourself joined up!

If anyone has/knows someone who has a minibus liscence and is prepared to come on an all expenses paid road trip can you please let me know.  The planning of this event hinges on you!!

This is an endurance race, so fitties only need apply. Estimating a cost of £60 per head to cover minibus, driver, 1 nights accomodation and some food. If your into it £10 sponsorship for charity should be fairly easy to come by and we can pass it on to the charities comittee.
